Could we ever know each other...? presented by Jamelie Hassan

Jamelie Hassan's work involves interdisciplinary projects. Research in archives, both public and private, has been a significant aspect of her work. Curatorial, collective and collaborative projects based on archival materials as well as some of her artworks will be included in this presentation. Conceptual in her approach, the materials used often reveal hidden histories or make visible unexpected connections or narratives. Many of her installation works have reflected on the position of children in relation to knowledge and childhood memories, while others allow for the unexpected and improvisational.

Jamelie Hassan is a visual artist based in London, Ontario who is also active as a lecturer, writer, and independent curator. Her works are in major public collections. She has organized both national and international programs including Orientalism and Ephemera, a touring exhibition, originally presented at Art Metropole, Toronto. She is one of the founders of two artist-run centres in London, Ontario: the Forest City Gallery (1973-present) and the Embassy Cultural House (1983-1990/2020-ongoing). Recipient of numerous awards, including the “Canada 125” Medal for outstanding community service in 1993. In 2001 she received the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts and in 2018 an honorary doctorate from OCAD University, Toronto and in 2023 an honorary doctorate from Western University
