"Below Decks in the Covenant: Blackness in the Two Row Tradition"

3 March 2022, 11:30AM ZOOM (link to register below)

In this talk, I investigate the unacknowledged presence of Black people in the peace-making arrangements between the Six Nations and colonial powers such as the Dutch and the British that is widely known as the Covenant Chain and the Two Row Wampum agreements. My aim is to ask what future prospects for “peace, friendship, and respect” might emerge when we admit that Black people were below decks in the sailing ships of Europeans who were working out protocols with Haudenosaunee canoists about how to share the river of life on Turtle Island.
