Join us Thursday, September 26 for our first Art Now! lecture of the term, featuring artist and curator Jonathan Middleton. Presented in partnership with the McIntosh Gallery.

Jonathan Middleton is an artist, curator, and publisher working between Toronto and Vancouver. Middleton currently serves as executive director of Art Metropole (Toronto) and editor-at-large for Information Office, a Vancouver-based design and publishing studio. He served as director/curator of Vancouver’s Or Gallery from 2007 to 2017, and established the Or’s Berlin satellite space in 2010, directing its operations until its closure in 2015. Middleton also served as director/curator of the Western Front Exhibitions Program (1999-2005), and was a founding member of the art periodical Fillip in 2004, serving as its first publisher until 2008. Through these appointments, he has organized numerous exhibitions and projects, including Montreal, Seattle, Melbourne, Hong Kong, and Chilliwack.

His own artwork has been exhibited at Middleton has served on the board of Artspeak, Projectile Publishing Society, the Artist-run Centres and Collectives Conference (ARCA) and has taught graduate and undergraduate classes at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Middleton maintains an active art practice and has exhibited, performed, and screened works at the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver), VIVO Media Arts, the Chicago International Film Festival, Dazibao (Montreal) and Konsthalle 323 (Stockholm).

Tours of "Publishing Against the Grain" and "Anti-Profit: Independent Publishing in London" will follow the talk at the McIntosh Gallery. Starting at 8:30PM, they will be led by Abby Vincent and Ruth Skinner.
