Winning Women’s Hearts & Minds: Selling Cold War Culture

The History Department is welcoming Dr. Diana Cucuz as it's sixth Research Seminar Series speaker.

Dr. Cucuz's presentation will analyze how Amerika, a Cold War era Russian-language magazine similar to Life, was used first, to appeal to Russian "babushkas," and show them that an American-style consumer culture and conservative gender norms could better their lives, and second, to simultaneously undermine the Soviet regime.

More broadly, it sheds light on the importance of cultural diplomacy and the significance of women, gender, and consumption to international politics during the Cold War.

This event will be held both in-person and via Zoom
