Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' Last Blasphemous Libel Case
The History Department's first Research Seminar Series of the fall 222 semester will feature Dr. Bruce Douville as he shares the story of the last 'blasphemous libel' case in Canada after a movie theatre owner aired Monty Python's Life of Brian in 1979.
In November 1979, a clergyman laid criminal charges of "blasphemous libel" against the manager and owners of a movie theatre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, for showing Monty Python's Life of Brian. This was the last time that anybody was charged with "blasphemous libel" in Canada.
In this presentation, Bruce Douville will share the story of how this case unfolded, placing the events in broader social, religious and legal contexts.
Please note that this event is remote and a zoom link will be provided to all RSVP.
