Hosted by the Centre for Urban Policy and Local Governance and the Department of Political Science

Led by Dr. Katherine Levin Einstein and Dr. Jack Lucas.

In the past decade, surveys of elected municipal politicians have become an increasingly common research method in local and urban politics. In this workshop, we will discuss the motivations for surveys of municipal political elites, the strengths and weaknesses of elite survey data, and the role of municipal elite surveys in research on local and urban politics, elite political behaviour, and political representation. We will also discuss how emerging data-collection efforts in other areas (e.g. large public opinion surveys, municipal policy indicators, municipal fiscal data) can substantially increase the value of elite survey data.

Katherine Levine Einstein is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Boston University. She is co-director of the Menino Survey of Mayors, a multi-year survey of city mayors in the United States.

Jack Lucas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Calgary. He is project director for the Canadian Municipal Barometer, an annual survey of municipal mayors and councillors in Canada.
