Bridging barriers and crossing thresholds: Identifying and addressing misconceptions in biology to improve learning
There is evidence that student misconceptions and “troublesome knowledge” (concepts that are particularly challenging to grasp) interfere with effective student learning. There are also key threshold concepts which must be mastered to proceed to subsequent concepts. Dr. Noel has been working with students to identify, explore, and address common major microbiology misconceptions and troublesome concepts which relate to key themes in biology. This has potential implications for biology education across the curriculum.
