Pick your poison: evolutionary genetics of ethanol resistance in Drosophila
In the wild, Drosophila melanogaster adults and larvae feed on decaying fruit, which can contain ethanol in concentrations as high as 6-7%. Temperate populations of this cosmopolitan species have evolved high ethanol resistance compared to ancestral tropical populations. I use the temperate-tropical difference as a system to explore the genetic basis of adaptation.
