Lactic acid: Food for thought or Achilles heel for Alzheimer's disease
The brain is an incredibly demanding organ from an energetic perspective. New findings from the Cumming lab suggest that lactate metabolism is beneficial for the healthy aging brain. However, disturbed lactate production or transport may contribute to Alzheimer's disease progression. Therapies targeting lactate metabolism may represent an entirely new avenue to treat Alzheimer's disease.
