“Some insight into MeteoSwiss’ work to monitor and forecast weather and climate”

ABSTRACT

MeteoSwiss is the national weather service of Switzerland whose core duties include atmospheric monitoring, issuing meteorological alerts to protect lives and infrastructure, providing meteorological forecasts and dispersion calculations in the case of nuclear, chemical or biological incidents, and providing meteorological information to aviation. To fulfill its mission with the best quality and efficiency, MeteoSwiss follows a strategy with accents on a robust production, on acquiring expertise, on automation and digitalization and on national and international collaboration. In this seminar I will present four core activities and show how our strategy is implemented: 1) The longest total ozone data set of the world; 2) Emergency Response Meteorology; 3) Automated reporting for aeronautical meteorology and 4) Profiling wind, aerosols and clouds on a European scale.
