Justice Sheilah Martin

Western Law's Distinguished Speakers Committee is honoured to host Justice Sheilah Martin of the Supreme Court of Canada. Justice Martin will speak on “So, You Wanted to Go to Law School? (Good, We Need You)”.

Over the course of her impressive 30-year legal career, Justice Martin has focused on a wide-range of important issues including Indigenous matters, equality rights and the wrongfully convicted.

She acted pro bono for the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund and the Alberta Association of Sexual Assault Centres in cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, and alongside many others, contributed to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.

Justice Martin has a lifelong passionate commitment to education, including increasing the numbers of people from minority groups in law schools and the legal profession. She was a law professor and Dean at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and serves on the Canadian Judicial Council’s Education Committee.

After appointments to the to the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in December 2017.
