Michael St. Patrick Baxter

Join the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the Western Faculty of Law to welcome Michael St. Patrick Baxter, where he will share his experience as a law student and the lessons he has learned during his legal practice.

Michael St. Patrick Baxter is Senior Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP, an international law firm based in Washington, D.C., where he has practiced law for 40 years, specializing in corporate restructuring and bankruptcy reorganization. Mr. Baxter attended Western for two years as an undergraduate, and then attended the Faculty of Law, where he earned a law degree in 1979.  A member of the bars of Ontario and the District of Columbia, Mr. Baxter served as a law clerk to the Chief Justice of Ontario. He received an LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School in 1983.

Mr. Baxter has been honored by election by his peers to the most preeminent professional groups in the United States, including as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, a Conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference, a Member of the International Insolvency Institute, and a Member of The American Law Institute. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Mr. Baxter was appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States to serve on the U.S. Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules.

An adjunct professor at The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., where he has taught for two decades, Mr. Baxter was awarded the Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award. He has published extensively in the bankruptcy field and is a contributing editor of the 13-volume treatise Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice 3d.

Mr. Baxter is Chair of the D.C. Road Show, an organization dedicated to outreach to African-American law students, and serves on the Western Law Advisory Council.
