Kinlessness and mortality: lacking family in older age

Sarah Patterson, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Sociology

Part of the Centre for Research on Social Inequality Speaker Series

Wednesday, May 2, 2018
12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
SSC 5220

Kinlessness, lacking various types of close kin, is a growing phenomenon, especially among recent cohorts of older adults. Kinless older adults have poorer self-rated health and higher levels of disability, but nothing is known about long-term outcomes. Dr. Patterson will discuss research examining whether older adults lacking close kin have higher mortality than their counterparts with family members and examines different potential pathways where kin might matter.
