Talk by Jed Long (DSAS Colloquium)
Abstract:
In this talk I will discuss my previous and current research exploring methods and models for understanding wildlife movement. In particular, I focus on two problems commonly encountered in wildlife tracking studies: i) estimating measures of space use (i.e., home range and utilization distribution), and ii) quantifying inter-individual interactions. I will talk about different tools and methods I have developed for studying these problems, how they are rooted in ideas from GIS and geography, and how we use them in practical applications. I will also discuss common issues raised in the movement ecology literature when dealing with wildlife tracking data, such as spatial scale, temporal scale, and the impact of constraints and/or barriers to movement.
