Title: Multi-scale modelling of patho-physiological mechanisms in the human heart and kidney.

Abstract:
All organs in the human body are deleteriously affected in the renal failure patient. The pathophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Experimental and clinical research is resource intensive. We believe that clinical and experimental research design can be pre-informed by an in silico mathematical-computational assessment. To achieve this long term goal, subcellular processes to organ models (multi-scale structure-function models) that include important structure and biophysical mechanisms are being developed. This will lead to a virtual hypothesis testing platform that will provide indicative cause-effect relationships.
In this talk, I will give an overview of ongoing work in the cardio-renal computational laboratory which is within the McIntyre clinical research group. I will highlight the mathematically interesting challenges in the theory and simulations.
