Guest Artist Talk/Q&A: Janina Fialkowska, piano
Room: Studio 242
London
Join us for a special talk with renowned Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska. A Q&A session follows, moderated by Faculty of Music Dean Michael Kim, along with a book signing opportunity.
Janina Fialkowska’s memoir A Note in Time is a series of autobiographical sketches, sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, following the concert pianist's tumultuous career and a life full of surprises.
A protégé of the legendary pianist Artur Rubenstein, who described her as “a born interpreter of Chopin,” Janina Fialkowska has enchanted audiences and critics around the world for almost 50 years. While well loved wherever she went, she has been a bit of a recluse for most of her life: “one of those ‘best-kept secret’ pianists, loved by connoisseurs for her tonal refinement and exquisite musical taste …” (London Sunday Times).
A Note in Time, finished during the pandemic lockdown, is a fascinating glimpse into her personal life, her struggles as a woman in a male-dominated world, her battles with life threatening physical and mental illnesses, the extraordinary people with whom she came in contact all over the world and their influence over her life.
She will also join us for a masterclass with current Western Music piano students the day before this event.
