Sound Affects: Three Theories of Timbre
How does timbre contribute to affective experiences of music? In this talk, I review recent work from my lab and posit three hypotheses concerning timbre’s meaningfulness. Timbre perception and cognition, in this account, is (1) cross-modal, (2) motor-mimetic, and (3) social. The talk weaves together behavioral and neuroimaging evidence to suggest a critical framework for interpreting timbre’s effects on music listening.
