Graduate Colloquium

Presented by Graduate Studies in Music, the Don Wright Faculty of Music Graduate Colloquium series includes lectures by distinguished guests, Western faculty members, and senior graduate students on all fields of research and creative activity in music.

Maud Hickey (Northwestern University)
“Creative Thinking in Music: What Do We Know? And Where Is It Happening?”

In this session, Hickey will present an overview of the research on creative thinking in music – as it relates to teaching and learning with students. This overview will look at ways in which we’ve defined and measured creative people, processes, products and places over time. The most recent view of the literature brings us to a discussion of a “Componential Theory of Creativity” in which a more holistic and integrative view is required to fully understand creativity, and especially to support it in a learning environment. Discussion will bring us to implication for music education in K-12 settings as well as in collegiate level music.

All Colloquium series events take place on selected Fridays in Talbot College 101 at 3:30 pm. (unless otherwise noted). Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend!
