How to Curate your Zoom Backrop, and Why You Should

Wednesday, September 30, 2020
12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

To Zoom is now a dreaded verb for teaching, meeting, and even interviewing. For most of us, some corner of our home is reluctantly serving as a classroom, office, and semi-public space. Not everyone has bookcase credibility to spare in that Zoom space. And yet the stuff behind us, or lack thereof, may be competing with what we say. Even as we safeguard our privacy (and common humanity) under new working conditions, there are basic set-dressing and lighting tricks that everyone can apply to make their Zoom space more effective. Come to share ideas (and some needed humor, maybe) about lighting, camera placement, clutter v. atmosphere, empty v. neutral backgrounds, and frequent Salvador Dali mistakes. Facilitated by Janine Barchas, Professor of English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin. The Scholars to Leaders Speaker Series are monthly Zoom events showcasing guest speakers who share valuable insight and expertise on critical aspects of leadership from their own career experiences both inside and outside of academia. They are open to master’s students, doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty and staff.
