"Networked Plazas: YouTube, Narcomedia and the Digitization of Criminal Communication"

Presented by Jeff Heydon as part of the FIMS Seminar Series.

Abstract: The idea of representation is regularly woven into the pageantry of many criminal fraternities and it is something that has traditionally been connected directly to the body (tattoos, specific clothing, etc.). The increased emphasis on the digital self in contemporary culture, however, has blurred the phenomenological and ontological distinctions typically associated with the limits of the body and the locations of bodily representation. What is interesting is the degree to which this sort of identification via self-promotion is resulting in criminal organizations’ adopting the use of digital media tools and annexing space on social media platforms. This presentation will look at the rise of criminal representation via smartphones and social media as a natural continuation of the process of social identification that characterized earlier criminal organizations.

All are welcome to attend.
