How to Do Things With Dreams

Wednesday, March 28, 2018
12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
FIMS and Nursing Building (FNB)
Room: 4070

Presented by Sharon Sliwinski.

Since the 1920s, scientists and colonial administrators have attempted to record and catalogue the dreams of their subjects. More often than not, these projects were caught up in the ambitions of empire. Colonizers wanted access to the inner lives of the people they ruled. And yet dreams, which are rooted in the unconscious, have a way of resisting such projects, exposing the unreason of empire. My discussion will highlight some of the ways people have attempted to make use of dream-life as a resource for political problems, including my own project, The Museum of Dreams.

Part of the FIMS Seminar Series.
