Disruption and Testimony: Archival Photographs, Project Naming and Inuit Memory in Nunavut, Canada

Presented by Carol Payne, Carleton University.

Since 2001, Inuit participants in Project Naming have worked to identify some of the many thousands of Inuit depicted in Library and Archives Canada's historic photographs collection. Those seemingly straightforward acts of identification involve the re-narrativization of photographs depicting a period of "aggressive assimilation," which Inuit often describe as "the disruption." This talk examines how Project Naming participants recalibrate Western notions of individual legal testimony through Indigenous storytelling epistemologies while also challenging linear conceptualizations of history.
