Non-Credit Graduate Course: The Thermochemistry of Smouldering Combustion

Summary
This non-credit graduate course focuses on developing a fundamental understanding of smouldering combustion science and developing the tools for analyzing combustion for developing practical applications of engineering value.  It will build a methodology to ensure that students can design their experiments and numerical models from a solid thermochemistry basis.  The seminars will help participants establish empirical and theoretical evidence of mass balance using the combustion front as a reference frame.

Outline
The seminars are organized into four main parts:
•    Thermochemical analyses (proximate, elemental, thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analyses from principles to interpretation)
•    Kinetics of heterogeneous combustion (principle of formulating a global reaction mechanism as the basis for mass balance calculations)
•    Concurrent smouldering experiments (including reactor geometry, key combustion parameters, typical data acquired and its interpretation)
•    Mass balance (mass balance based on all experimental evidence and thermodynamics theory learned from the first three parts)
Note: considerations of numerical modelling of smouldering can also be included if of particular interest to the participants.
Interaction
The duration of each seminar ranges from 1 to 1.5 h including time for class discussion. In addition, all participants are invited at any time to drop by SEB 3039A to go into more in-depth discussions with the professor.
Evaluation: This is a non-credit, “for interest” course.  It involves no assignments or exam. 
Professor: Dr. Martins is a Western Visiting University Scholar co-hosted by MME and CEE.  He welcomes research collaboration discussions and can be found in SEB 3039a until Aug 18.  His email is marcio.martins@ufes.br
Bio
Dr. Marcio Martins is an Associate Professor and Head of Laboratory of Combustion and Combustible Matter and Laboratory for Computational Transport Phenomena at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Federal University of Espirito Santo. His position is shared between the research areas of Fluid Dynamics and Systems and Thermal Processes. Therefore, the main focus of his research is to combine experimental and modelling techniques to solve problems related to Thermochemical and Multi-phase Processes in Thermal Systems. The main areas of activities are: numerical and experimental heterogeneous combustion for energy production, valorization and treatment of solid waste, optimization of processes with reactive transport, and modelling multi-phase flow via CFD.
