GLOBAL ENGINEERING: INTERSECTIONS OF PASSION WITH CALLING

By

Prof. Ernest Yanful, Ph.D., P.Eng., FCSCE

Fellow, The Africa Institute, Western University

ABSTRACT

In this seminar, the speaker will share his background, education and training and the influences that have helped shape his passion over the years. The seminar will examine the needs of the vast majority of economically challenged people and how global engineering thinking can be harnessed to address those needs. Framed in the idea of giving back to society, the seminar lists challenges and opportunities that engage the engineer and academic and how they can respond. A critical aspect of being able to respond effectively to societal needs is background preparation and personal development, especially in an attempt to make sustainable interventions in developing countries and needy communities. Living one’s passion to make an impact means that at some point, one works for significance rather than for personal promotion.  Examples of contributions that the engineer can make while living their passion are given. Great personal satisfaction is gained by combining passion with contribution.
