will present a talk entitled:

"Accelerating Biomarker Discovery and Drug Screening in Metabolomics for Innovations in Public Health: Blood, Sweat and Tears"

Abstract:
Comprehensive metabolite profiling (i.e., metabolomics) offers a systemic approach for understanding the phenotype of an organism on a molecular level that is closely associated with clinical outcomes. However, low sample throughput and complicated data processing remain major bottlenecks to biomarker discovery when using conventional separations based on LC-MS and GC/MS methods. An introduction to multisegment injection-capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (MSI-CE-MS) will first be presented as a multiplexed separation platform that takes advantage of customized serial injections to enhance sample throughput and data fidelity with quality assurance in conjunction with high resolution mass spectrometry. Recent initiatives towards population-based screening of iodine deficiency in Canada, improved detection of cystic fibrosis in support of universal newborn screening programs, as well as systemic drug surveillance to tackle a worldwide opioid and prescription drug crisis will be discussed.
